APEX, N.C. — A distraught woman told emergency dispatchers Sunday that a Wake County woman had just shot her husband, according to a 911 call released Tuesday.

Donna Evans, 53, died in the shooting, which occurred at 4224 Brook Cross Drive, near Apex. Her husband, John Evans, 67, was shot in the stomach. He was listed in critical condition Tuesday at WakeMed Hospital.

The 911 caller, whose name was not released, said she was in the shower upstairs at the home Sunday evening when she heard John Evans screaming for help.

"He said she shot him," the caller said.

The caller told dispatchers that the gun was on the floor next to Donna Evans, who was lying on her stomach in the bedroom with blood on her back.

John Evans could be heard yelling for help in the background of the call.

Wake County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Phyllis Stephens said the shooting was "not a random act," but would not confirm other details.
