New evidence found in Zahra Baker search

In a statement Thursday, investigators said search teams located it Wednesday while searching in Caldwell County for the missing 10-year-old and that it would be analyzed at the State Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab.

They did not say what that evidence was or how it could prove useful to investigators.

WBTV in Charlotte, however, reported Thursday that search teams found “possible human remains.”

“We understand the concern and interest in this case by the public, but we must be cautious in prematurely releasing information so it will not jeopardize any future criminal proceedings,” police said.

In the last month, they have looked at several locations and found the artificial left leg that belonged to the girl, who lost her own leg to bone cancer.

Meanwhile, the Children Protection Council of Catawba County announced Thursday that it has plans for a candlelight vigil on Tuesday, Zahra’s 11th birthday.

Her stepmother, Elisa Baker, has been charged with obstruction of justice. Police say she admitted writing a bogus ransom note.

The girl's father, Adam Baker, 33, met with Hickory police for about an hour Thursday in the presence of his attorney. Adam Baker was arrested Oct. 25 on a series of charges unrelated to Zahra's disappearance. He is out on bond.
