GASTON, N.C. — In an effort to capture a would-be robber, Gaston police this week released surveillance video of an attempted convenience store hold-up in which the store clerk fought back.

The robbery happened Nov. 2 at the Gaston Food Mart, 105 N. Bay St., when, police say, a masked man wielding a sawed-off shotgun walked into the store around 10 p.m.

Almost immediately, surveillance video inside the store shows, the store clerk behind the front counter, approached the gunman, reached for the gun’s barrel, and forced the robber outside the store.

An outside camera recorded the two fighting over the gun and the robber eventually striking the clerk several times, including once to the head, injuring the clerk.

The suspect then fled the scene on foot.

Investigators are asking that anyone with information about the crime is asked to call the Gaston Police Department at 252-537-1047 or Northampton County Crime Stoppers at 252-534-1110.
