DOT closing I-40 lanes to widen highway
The North Carolina Department of Transportation will close lanes on Interstate 40 East from Wade Avenue to east of the Jones Franklin Road overpass in Wake County beginning Monday night, weather permitting.

The lane closures are necessary for crews to begin shifting traffic as part of the project to widen I-40, according to the DOT. Once the shift is complete, crews can begin working on the existing lanes to seal the cracks, repave and repair the shoulders.
Work will take place from east of the Jones Franklin overpass to the U.S. Highway 1/64 bridges Monday from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Crews are expected to continue nightly on the following sections of I-40 until the re-striping and subsequent traffic shifts are complete.
- I-40 East from Cary Towne Boulevard (Exit 291) to the U.S. 1/64 bridges on Tuesday from 9 p.m. until Wednesday at 6 a.m.;
- I-40 East from N.C. 54 (Exit 290) to Cary Towne Boulevard on Wednesday from 9 p.m. until Thursday at 6 a.m.;
- I-40 East from Wade Avenue (Exit 289) to N.C. 54 on Thursday from 9 p.m. until Friday at 6 a.m.
At least one lane of traffic will remain open at all times.
More work is scheduled to complete the eastbound shift next weekend. Once crews complete the shift in the eastbound direction, they will move to the westbound direction. Additional information will be released next week.
The work is a part of the project to widen 6.2 miles of I-40 from Wade Avenue to east of the Jones Franklin Road bridge. The project is anticipated to be complete by June 30, 2011.
