Ten wounded in Durham drive-by shooting

Witnesses told police that a vehicle stopped in front the house in the 1100 block of Delano Street, off Fidelity Drive, around 4 a.m., and then its occupants opened fire, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.

"I heard this barrage of bullets. I thought it was fire crackers, but then it got real intense," homeowner Margaret Austin said.

"It was just loud gunshots, between 10 and 12 gunshots," resident George Broady said. "Then I just started hearing people running down the street just screaming."

Two of the injured had serious wounds, Michael said. An update on the condition of the other victims wasn't available. Their names have not been released.

Crime scene investigators recovered a handgun about a block away from the house. Investigators spent the day combing the scene for evidence and placed markers on the street where they found drops of blood.

Michael said that investigators have not determined a motive or developed information about suspects. The investigation was ongoing.

Residents said that the people who live in the house where the shooting happened hold a lot of parties. Police were called out to the house Saturday afternoon, residents said. But Michael said she had no record of police being at the home prior to the drive-by shooting.

Austin said the shooting has her scared to look out her window into the neighborhood where she's lived and felt safe for 30 years.

"I'm scared because it's usually quiet over here," she said. "It's just real, real quiet."
