Skeletal remains found under Fayetteville bridge
Police said human remains were found beneath a railroad bridge across the Cape Fear River on Wednesday afternoon.
Posted — UpdatedA passerby contacted police around 1:30 p.m. to report a body off Broad Street between Person and Russell streets, police spokesman Dan Grubb said. The remains were found with what appeared to be men’s clothing.
Police said the body had likely been there awhile because all that remained was a skeleton.
"It was too early to tell the cause of death at this point in time," Grubb said. "At this point, it's not immediately obvious whether it's a male or female."
Gary Blackwell, who owns a nearby automotive business, said he often sees people walking the tracks.
“They usually have people down here back and forth all the time. We’ve complained about the traffic through here, the homeless people,” Blackwell said.
This is the second time this week Fayetteville police have responded to a body found.
It's unclear how long the body had been there and how the person died.
