LILLINGTON, N.C. — A Triton High School student was indicted Monday on a second-degree murder charge in a June wreck outside a Dunn Walmart that killed his girlfriend.

Dillon Tart, 18, was surrounded by his family when he surrendered at the Harnett County Detention Center Monday afternoon.

Tart's mother, Patricia Jackson, said her son's wreck was an accident.

"It is tragic, it is just a tragic accident,” she said.

Ashley Moore, 16, a junior at Triton High School in Dunn, died in the June 4 crash. Tart, who was driving the SUV, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses reported seeing the teens arguing inside the SUV at a gas station several hundred yards away and then seeing the SUV accelerate, clip two vehicles and then flip several times, hitting the front of the store.

Dunn police said video from nearby surveillance cameras confirmed witness accounts that the SUV was traveling at a high rate of speed.
