RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh ministry is hosting a program to help job seekers dress for success and land a job.

Robert Battle, the program director of StepUP Ministry’s job skills course, said participants are learning to hone the skills they need to land a job.

“We’re going to teach them how to create a resume, how to speak at an interview, but the way that they look has a powerful impact,” he said.

Maxcine Bland said StepUP’s course has helped her put her best foot forward in job interviews.

“Image is very power-packed in your life. It shows a lot about who you are and where you're going to go in life,” Bland said.

During the program, participants work together to dress a mannequin.

“So that we’re sure that they get a picture about what a well-dressed person who’s going to an interview should look like,” Battle said.

Once they learn how to dress properly, participants are allowed to pick out five free outfits from the ministry’s collection.

Bland said the program offered exactly the kind of help she needed, especially teaching her to what to wear for interviews.

Bland now works for StepUP Ministry while building her own business. She said the skills she learned at the ministry will last a lifetime.

“They bring about the hope. They give you the opportunity to reach your best in success and be successful," she said.

StepUP Ministry also offers a life skills program to help with everyday issues like communication and budgeting.
