Second suspect arrested in shooting Durham chief's car

Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez was driving near the intersection of South Roxboro and Dillard streets April 29 when a shot penetrated his windshield.

LYNN, MASS. — A man suspected of firing a shot that hit an unmarked car driven by the Durham chief of police was arrested Friday in Massachusetts, authorities said.

Tony (Anthony) “Big Red” Person, 27, of West Corporation Street in Durham, was the second person arrested in the case. Lebron “Gutta” Brown, 21, of Fidelity Drive in Durham, was taken into custody May 14. Both men were found in Lynn, Mass., with the help of local police and the U.S. Marshals Service.

Lopez said he initially thought the sound was a car backfiring, but then saw someone firing from a passing car.

Lopez was not injured and was able to provide a description of the gunman to investigators.
