Man tells Fayetteville police he 'may have killed' woman
Fayetteville police were investigating a woman's death Thursday after a man flagged down an officer and said he "may have killed" her, according to police.
Posted — UpdatedAround 3:30 a.m., the man, identified as 55-year-old Tommy Lee Thompson, got a police officer's attention in the area of Gillespie and Russell streets and said that he "assaulted and may have killed an unknown female in the Hawley Lane area," police said.
Police said Thompson then took police to the crime scene – a wooded area near a creek – where they found a woman's body on the ground. She was identified as 40-year-old homeless woman, Katrina Elaine Colbert.
Police would not say what kind of trauma she suffered, and it was unclear whether she and Thompson knew each other.
Thompson, a homeless man and registered sex offender, was charged with first-degree murder and first-degree rape. He was being held in the Cumberland County Detention Center on Thursday.
