Belgian students remain in Triangle due to ash
Foreign exchange students from Belgium remained in the Triangle on Tuesday after ash from a volcano in Iceland continued to ground some flights across Europe.
Posted — UpdatedThe students were scheduled to fly out of Raleigh-Durham International Airport on Saturday morning, but he flight was canceled. They were scheduled to leave again Tuesday morning, but their flight out of RDU was canceled.
The students have been in the United States for about two weeks attending classes at Smith Middle School in Chapel Hill. They also visited Washington, D.C. The students have been staying with area host families.
RDU operates one direct flight to and from London daily. Officials said those fights remained canceled on Tuesday.
London's airports – among the busiest in Europe and a major worldwide hub – are likely to stay closed until Wednesday, and forecasters said more delays were possible if the dense ash cloud remained over much of the country. Airspace in Germany also remained officially closed until 8 p.m., but a limited number of flights were allowed in at low altitude.
