Warrant: Chase suspect dropped $22K in woods
A Chapel Hill man fleeing authorities dropped $22,000 in cash in a wooded area after leading a 22-mile chase across Wake County Tuesday, according to search warrants filed Thursday.
Posted — UpdatedThe affidavit for the warrant says that Deputy A. Locklear stopped Randel Levone Riggsbee, 32, for a tint violation on his pink 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis, which had a "Hello Kitty" vanity plate. Riggsbee gave a false name to Locklear, then sped away, the warrant says.
The chase went along Interstate 40 until the Mercury ran over stop sticks and went down the Aviation Boulevard exit. The car clipped a Jeep before crashing into a guardrail, and Riggsbee then ran into a wooded area, authorities said.
The warrant says that authorities found $22,005 in the woods and that Riggsbee said it wasn't his.
A narcotics K-9 gave a positive alert to the seized money during a blind search of five evidence bags, according to the warrant.
Riggsbee, of 503 Sykes St., faces 15 charges stemming from the wreck and outstanding warrants in Wake, Orange, Alamance and Randolph counties. He was placed in the Wake County jail under a $148,150 secured bond.
