GRAHAM, N.C. — A tractor-trailer driver died Wednesday morning after his truck crashed on Interstate 85 South in Alamance County and went down an embankment into a river.

Authorities did not release his name.

The crash happened around 8:15 a.m. near Jimmie Kerr Road near Graham, according to WFMY News 2 in Greensboro. The cab of the tractor-trailer was submerged underwater, but crews were able to pull it out of the river.

Two of four lanes of I-85 South were closed at mile marker 150 and were not expected to reopen until mid-afternoon.

A witness told troopers that the Western Express truck, which was hauling bottled water, had stopped at a nearby Pilot gas station shortly before the crash.

State Department of Transportation officials called in a crew to help clean up the fuel and bottled water that spilled into the creek.
