GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A 10-year-old Goldsboro boy died after being hit by by an SUV while running across a street to a school bus stop Friday morning.

State troopers said that a Chevrolet Trail Blazer struck Dakota Medlin shortly before 7 a.m. as he was running across Stevens Mill Road, about 6½ miles outside Goldsboro.

Dakota was taken to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where he died.

Troopers said there was nothing the SUV driver, Wendy Jones, 32, of Four Oaks, could have done to avoid hitting the boy. No charges will be filed.

Witnesses told troopers that Dakota ran across a front yard and into the road without looking first.

Homeowner Teddy Price said that Dakota's father drops him off at his house before going to work early in the morning. He said the bus stop, which Dakota had used for 2 years, is in a dangerous curve.

Initially, troopers had said Dakota spent the night at a friend's house and was going to a different bus stop than his usual one.
