Teen killed in Spring Lake wreck

The teen was identified as Jonathan McKenzie, 15, of Linden. McKenzie was a student at Overhills High School.

SPRING LAKE, N.C. — A teen was struck and killed by a vehicle on Ray Road in Spring Lake on Wednesday evening, authorities said.

The wreck happened around 6 p.m. near Liberty Baptist Church, 1625 Ray Road. The wreck shut down Ray Road for more than two hours.

Based on witness statements, the teen was with two or three other people walking on the shoulder of Ray Road  headed to Liberty Baptist Church, Harnett County Highway Patrol Trooper D.E. Edwards said.

The driver, Terence Jones, 35, of Spring Lake, was traveling down Ray Road when he saw people on the side of the road. The teen suddenly decided to cross the road and darted into the street. The driver said he had no time to react, Edwards said.

Investigators have not figured out why the teen suddenly walked into the street.

Jones remained on the scene and cooperated with investigators. No charge have been filed.
