DURHAM, N.C. — Police investigating the August stabbing death of a Durham man found a severed body part at the scene, according to a search warrant.

Ron Fetherson, 53, was found stabbed to death inside his apartment at 1207 Truman St. on Aug. 30.

Neighbor Melvin Claiborne said he became concerned when he saw Fetherson's dog outside for a long period on a hot summer day, noting that Fetherson took good care of the animal. So, he went to check on his neighbor.

"That's when I discovered that he had been beaten and had been stabbed multiple times," Claiborne said. "It was horrific. It was shocking."

A search warrant states that officers recovered a number of items from the home, including a "detached bodily organ." Investigators turned the body and the body part over to the State Medical Examiner's Office.

Police declined to release any details of their investigation.

No one has been charged in the case.

"He was a veteran, a good guy. He liked to play with the children," Claiborne said of Fetherson. "I'd like to see some closure. I'd like to see whoever did this caught, just basically like to see some closure for him and his family."
