Raleigh looks to improve Five Points area
Merchants and customers of Raleigh’s Five Points, at the intersection of Glenwood Avenue, and Fairview and Whitaker Mill roads, are asking city planners to look into improving the area.
Posted — Updated"I love the character of it and the charm. It has just got a good feeling to it,” said Miles Engell, who frequents the Five Points area with her family. "It probably could use a little improvement in terms of parking. That can be difficult."
Engell is a regular at Lilly's Pizza, at 1813 Glenwood Ave., which has been serving up food for 15 years.
"My concern for Five Points is longevity. Otherwise, you are going to see a lot of empty storefronts,” Lilly's Pizza owner John Garrison said.
Garrison helped organize a meeting with city planners about the future of Five Points.
"There was a bit of concern on the part of business owners and merchants within Five Points that a lot of the city's attention was going towards downtown,” Garrison said.
The planning session could help solve parking and appearance issues in the area. Another concern is whether a roundabout would help ease traffic where six streets connect.
"The city will take that under consideration, if it will calm traffic and provide a sense of place for Five Points,” Raleigh Planning Director Mitchell Silver said.
The planning department will put together a formal proposal on improvements for the Five Points area in the next 45 days.
