APEX, N.C. — Police are waiting for forensic results in the shooting death of a 67-year-old woman found shot in her driveway on Wednesday.

A man walking a dog early Wednesday found Paula Jean Anderson outside of her home at 1209 Boxwood Lane, police said. She later died at WakeMed

"We had somebody who heard a gunshot that we interviewed," said Apex police Capt. Ann Stephens. "And then somebody was walking their dog and actually saw the victim, and the person that was walking their dog is the person that actually called 911."

Police have recovered a handgun from the driveway.

"There is no danger to the public," Stephens said. "We feel like the person of interest we're speaking with knows the victim and is familiar with the victim, so we're not concerned that there are any public safety issues."

Anderson was married to Thomas Anderson, 91, and had one son in Raleigh, who has been notified, according to police. Wake County tax records show that the house where she lived belonged to her husband.

Neighbor Jennifer Austin said she would often see the couple coming and going from church.

"It's a very safe community. I've never felt any reason to be scared here," Austin said.

Investigators said Wednesday they were questioning a man of interest and that he knew Anderson.
