Son arrested in community leader's slaying

Cheo Burroughs, 35, of Highgate Avenue in Buffalo, N.Y., was charged with murder in the death of Bill Burroughs, 64, of Durham. He was denied bond, and his first court appearance was set for Monday.

The wife of Bill Burroughs returned home from church last Sunday morning and found him face down in a pool of blood inside their home on Red Cedar Circle. Investigators have not commented on motive or the cause of death.

Friends said that Bill Burroughs was a tireless volunteer.

"(He was) one of the greatest citizens that ever lived," said Durham City Councilwoman Cara Cole-McFadden, a high school classmate whose campaign Bill Burroughs ran.

"His character was well above those that I've met in my years. He always believed in giving and helping and giving back," she said.

Bill Burroughs played basketball at St. Augustine's College in the mid 1960s. He later served as national president of the college's alumni association and as alumni representative to the college's board of trustees.

He spent his career working with youth in the Northeast as a counselor, and he moved back to the Triangle after retiring.
