Man arrested in Sharpsburg slaying

Brandon Reid Jones, 22, of 1600 Lane St. in Wilson, was shot several times Friday evening. He died Sunday at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Police said the shooting stemmed from an ongoing, month-long dispute between groups in Sharpsburg and Wilson.

Investigators said they spotted a suspect in the case, Terrance Lamar Carr, 17, riding a scooter along U.S. Highway 301 on Sunday, and he tried to elude officers. After the scooter wrecked, Carr fled on foot, and officers had to use a stun gun to subdue him after a short chase, police said.

A crowd quickly surrounded the officers as they were taking Carr into custody, and several people tried to take money from him, police said. The crowd ignored several warnings to back away, police said, and officers had to use pepper spray on two women.

Ernestine Lynch, 37, and Bertha Jenkins, 53, both of 125 B St. in Sharpsburg, were charged with resisting, obstructing and delaying an officer.

A 2-year-old also was exposed to the pepper spray, but the child was fine about 30 minutes later, police said.

Carr was charged with accessory before the fact of first-degree murder, felony speeding to elude arrest, resisting a public officer, careless and reckless driving, felony possession of cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was being held in the Nash County Jail under a $70,000 bond.
