GARNER, N.C. — A man being questioned in the death of his girlfriend who was found unconscious on the side of a Garner road in February was found dead Thursday.

Garner police spokesman Sgt. Chris Clayton said Spencer Bolick was found dead inside Lake Benson Park at 1:25 p.m. from what appeared to be from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A motorist found Bolick's girlfriend, Mayela Orduna, 18, on the shoulder of Aversboro Road on Feb. 17. An autopsy found she died of a head injury consistent with exiting a moving car.

Bolick told police the two had been arguing at a party that night and that when they left, she jumped from the car, which he was driving at 30 mph.

According to the autopsy report, Bolick drove away, but then went with partygoers to look for Orduna. The partygoers found her and called 911, but Bolick didn't stay at the scene.

A Feb. 23 search warrant for Bolick's text messages claims that he and other party guests "fabricated a story of how the incident occurred in order to avoid responsibility for the victim's injuries."

Garner police have been investigating Orduna's case as a suspicious death but have not filed charges.

Clayton said Thursday the case is still under investigation.
