ATLANTA — Bobby Purcell has been with North Carolina State University for more than 20 years. Since being named executive director of the Wolfpack Club in 1997, he has helped raise more than $200 million for the school.

The Wall Street Journal has dubbed him the “Don of Donations,” and his efforts have helped make the Wolfpack Club one of the most successful fundraising machines in college athletics.

“Our people see a need. They love N.C. State. They want to help meet that need,” Purcell said. “What we have here is a strong grassroots organization.”

Last year alone, the booster club had a membership roster of more than 20,000.

“Bobby makes someone that gives $10 feel as important as someone that gives $10,000,” donor David Holt said.

Purcell prefers to credit the donors for their continued generosity. He says the strength of N.C. State is its people.

“We can never say ‘thank you’ enough” he said.

Purcell attended a gathering of the Atlanta chapter of the Wolfpack Alumni Association on Thursday. The event coincided with the team's competing in this year’s Atlantic Coast Conference basketball tournament.
