Police checkpoint looks for leads in fatal shooting

RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police set up a traffic checkpoint Tuesday evening to look for leads in the shooting death of Andrew Willie Brown.

Brown, 47, was shot while walking to a convenience store along the 2400 block of Poole Road around 7:45 p.m. on Feb. 9. He was taken to WakeMed, where he died a few days later.

A surveillance camera caught three people running away from the Poole Road area that evening. They may have headed to the Melvid Court area. Two people wore all-dark clothing, and the third person wore dark pants and a light-colored shirt.

Police set up a traffic checkpoint on Poole Road and handed out fliers to drivers Tuesday in hopes that someone may be able to identify the people in the video.

Brown's family members were at the checkpoint, too, hoping someone would come forward with information that could help police with the investigation.

“How could they sleep at night? How could anybody sleep after killing somebody for no reason?” said Angel Carapucci, who lived with Brown.

Carapucci said Brown was the kind of person who would do anything for anyone.

"I wake up some mornings and I say, 'Andrew where are you at?' and he ain't there,” Carapucci said.

"It was senseless and who might the next person be. You think about that. It could be a child. It could be a senior citizen," said Anne Brown, victim's sister.
