GARNER, N.C. — Garner police say they have identified a Hispanic woman who was found unconscious on the shoulder of Aversboro Road near Old Scarborough Lane on Tuesday morning. They are waiting for the woman's family to confirm her identity before releasing her name, however.

Investigators also have identified the people who were with the woman at the time of her injury. It was not "a random act of violence," Garner police said Tuesday afternoon.

A passing motorist called police at 3:31 a.m. to alert them that the woman was lying on the side of the road. She had suffered a head injury, and officers said they are not sure what caused it.

Emergency crews took the woman to WakeMed, where she was listed in critical condition Tuesday evening, police said.

The woman was wearing a black jacket and blue jeans. She is 5 feet tall, approximately 100 pounds, with shoulder-length, dark brown hair, brown eyes, light skin tone and a green butterfly tattoo on the right side of her stomach.

Anyone who saw the woman or has any information about her being on the road should call police at 919-772-8810.
