Roadwork to tie up Cross Creek Mall traffic

Work to widen the Morganton Road overpass above the All-American Freeway will shut it down until November. The freeway will also be shut down for two weekends late this month.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The new year will usher in more traffic hassles around Cross Creek Mall as crews work on one of Fayetteville's busiest interchanges.

Beginning Jan. 19, the four-lane Morganton Road bridge over the All-American Freeway will be closed until at least November.

"Nothing's wrong with it (the bridge). It's just a scheduled replacement project," Sgt. Eric Dow, with the Fayetteville police, said.

A $12 million widening project will add a lane in each direction, two turning lanes and sidewalks.

The overpass carries an estimated 53,000 vehicles a day, and surrounding roads – including Skibo and Cliffdale roads – also become congested.

The All-American Freeway at Morganton will also be shut down Jan. 23-25 and Jan. 30-Feb. 1. Road crews will be using cranes and other major equipment those weekends.

During that closure, drivers can use the exit ramps from the All-American Freeway, cross Morganton and return to the freeway.

However, when the construction ends, motorists will enjoy more free-flowing traffic, police said.

"There's only two lanes, so traffic will quickly back up into the intersection," Dow said. "But having three lanes, that will allow for more storage. We'll actually have a third lane to put some more cars in."
