Cab crash creates geyser in Raleigh
A two-vehicle crash sent a car careening into a fire hydrant, setting off a geyser that gushed several feet into the air at an intersection in southeastern Raleigh Saturday night.
Posted — UpdatedA cab heading east on Poole Road t-boned a car headed south on New Hope Road around midnight, police said. The impact crushed the front end of the cab and slammed the car into a fire hydrant.
A woman and her adult daughter inside the car were taken to WakeMed. The cabdriver walked away uninjured.
Water gushed from the broken hydrant at the rate of 3,000 gallons a minute, fire officials said. The water flowed for two hours, and a foot of water accumulated around the intersection of Poole and New Hope.
Police called Raleigh's Public Utilities Department to shut off the valve to the hydrant.
All of New Hope and one lane of Poole were shut down until emergency workers cleared the scene.
There was no word if any charges would be filed in the wreck.
