DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police were investigating a “serious traffic accident” involving an officer that happened Tuesday night at South Miami Boulevard and Laurel Drive.

Officers responded to a vehicle crash with injuries at 9:28 p.m.

A Durham officer was traveling east in his patrol vehicle when a 1993 Mercury Cougar, driven by a man, pulled into the travel lane from Laurel Drive.

The man was attempting to make a left turn onto South Miami Boulevard when the two vehicles crashed, police said. It appears that alcohol was a factor, in reference to the Mercury Cougar's driver, police said.

Four other people were inside the man’s vehicle, police said. Four of the five men were taken to Duke Hospital with injuries.

One of the injured men was in serious critical condition Wednesday, and the others received minor injuries. The names of the people involved in the crash were not released, pending further investigation.

Both vehicles involved in the crash were totaled.
