— A school-bus argument between two high-school students escalated into a stabbing that left one injured and the other in custody Friday afternoon.

A 14-year-old and 15-year-old boy got into the argument while riding on Durham Public Schools bus no. 94 near the intersection of Fayetteville and Pilot streets shortly before 3 p.m., said Kammie Michael, a spokeswoman for Durham police.

The younger teen stabbed the older boy in the back with a pocket knife, according to a preliminary investigation.

The victim was listed in serious condition at Duke University Medical Center, Michael said. Earlier, officials said his injuries were non-life-threatening.

Authorities took the 14-year-old into custody. He attends Hillside New Tech High School, which is located on the campus of Hillside High School.

The victim attends the traditional high school at the Hillside campus.

Officials withheld the names of the juveniles involved as the investigation continued late Friday afternoon.

According to a friend in Durham law enforcement, it's rare to find a murder victim in Durham that doesn't have a criminal record. That's anecdotal, would be interesting to see the real numbers, but it does beg the questions...

Is a murder in Durham more often cleaning up the neighborhood than a crime?

Is this a self-correcting problem, or is there enough inflow to make it self-sustaining?

I have to laugh at the posters who claim that Durham is no more dangerous than any other city, but I know a lot of the people in fire, rescue, and LE, so maybe that's an unfair advantage.

    balog,

well the editors have deleted my post, but you said "every town has it bad spots" or someting to that effect. I submit that not many towns have these "hotspots" on middle school buses. We're not talking about backstreets, this is buses. I maintain that if this fine upstanding young student is put on probation, I'm sure this type of violence won't occur again. As we all know, the probation officers are very committed to this accord.

"balog you are right every city has areas where crime is more concentrated and the race card is played consistently, albeit subtly, played by posters every time a crime is reported in Durham" -redant

There is no subtlety about it; racial composition of a given area is one of the strongest indicators of violent crime rate. It is over five times stronger than education or poverty levels.

"Raindog, you may want to check the stats there buddy, the crime stats are higher in wake county than in durham county. " -balog

Uhm, according to SBI statistics, Durham county has a higher rate in every single category of crime? Do you have a source that indicates otherwise?

Again, this is why I scrape together the tuition for my kids to go to private school. It is so worth it. There is too much chaos in the school system these days.....Wake county included.

peedee- I'm friends with a teacher who use to teach at Hillside, he left because of the violence and the gang activity. His family feared for his safety and asked him to find employment in another county.

Another two cases of sorry parenting.

Please remember according to Mayor Bell "Durham does not have a crime problem". He made this statement last year at a conference of local mayors. If local leaders believe there is no problem then how will we ever begin to solve the problem?
