RALEIGH, N.C. — A Raleigh man charged with murder in connection with the weekend hit-and-run death of another man was denied bond on the murder charge Tuesday.

Police charged Kenya Teveris Alston, 31, of 237 Big Oak St., with second-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon and felony hit-and-run in the March 1 collision that killed Matthew Paul Kraft, 21.

A judge did set a $5,000 bond on the assault charge and a $25,000 bond on the hit-and-run charge. Alston was also granted a court-appointed attorney.

A member of Alston's family, who was in court Tuesday, also broke down as the judge read aloud the charges against Alston. The woman screamed and fell to the floor. She was helped up by other family members and a deputy.

According to a police report, Kraft was waiting to turn left on Proctor Road about 2 a.m. Saturday when Alston lost control of his car and collided with Kraft's.

Kraft died Sunday at WakeMed.

Alston had been pulled over earlier for a headlight violation on New Bern Avenue and was trying to elude police, authorities said.

Initially, he was arrested Saturday on charges of driving while impaired and speeding and eluding arrest. He was out on a $30,000 bond when he was charged with murder.

Kraft, who was originally from Pennsylvania and had been living with his brother in Raleigh, had worked at the Chili's restaurant on Kildaire Farm Road in Cary.

His friends planned to hold a vigil for him there Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., but because of weather, it has been moved to Kirk of Kildaire church on High Meadow Drive. More than 50 people are expected to attend.
