ENFIELD — A man was found dead early Thursday morning after a house fire from which a Halifax County sheriff's deputy had tried unsuccessfully to save him.

The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office and Enfield Fire Department were called to the house on James Williams Farm Road at 2:11 a.m. after a neighbor saw the house on fire.

Deputy C. Jenkins was the first to arrive and was told that Wilson Williams, 77, was still inside. Jenkins went into the burning house and tried several times to enter Williams’ bedroom, but flames and smoke kept him back, officials said.

Firefighters found Williams’ body in the house.

The sheriff's office was investigating with assistance from the State Bureau of Investigation's arson investigation unit.
