A public viewing will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. at Lea Funeral Home near Poole Road. Visitation will be held from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, immediately followed by his funeral.

Thacker died Dec. 28, 2007, after a long illness complicated by diabetes. He was 45.

Thacker was a three-time All-American who won the NCAA championship in 1984. He went on to a movie career with such films as "City Heat" and "Police Academy."

Thacker's funeral will be Thursday at Springfield Baptist Church off Auburn-Knightdale Road. He will be buried in Winston Salem.

pikemom - why does something negative ALWAYS come from you. Here is a New Years resolution for you - think before you speak. It's not necessary to say something all the time.

How sad this is. He was so young and it sounds like he was a really great guy. My condolences to the family.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the deceased family and friends. He seemed like he was a good person. So sad he lost his life at such a young age. He was just in his prime.

I always felt he was never fully recognized for his potential and talent by Raleigh. In his time though he was definitely a local celebrity and a character that was spoken of often by people in this city at least.

Lets B Honest, I agree. It seems like everyone knows someone who is either overweight or has diabetes. It is sad.

Tab was a freshman when I was a senior. I got to see him wrestle a few times and most matches were called by the opposing coach when it was obvious their guy couldn't even shake Tab. Sorry for his family losing Tab at such a young age.....be thankful everyday if you enjoy good health.

I recognized him from Police Academy 4, he played the huge recruit named "House", when I was managing a Blockbuster in Raleigh. He used to come in all the time and was extremely nice, he'll be missed.
