DURHAM, N.C. — Durham police were investigating an incident that started as a break-in in progress call shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday on Holloway Street and ended with a fatal collision.

Officers were dispatched to a house break-in call in the 500 block of Holloway Street at 5:54 p.m. When they arrived, they encountered several people in a car and at least one person armed with a handgun who came out of a house.

The driver attempted to leave the scene and, according to initial reports, the vehicle came toward officers. Officers fired on the vehicle, but the driver fled down Holloway Street.

A short time later, the vehicle – a Ford Taurus – was involved in a three-vehicle collision at the intersection of Morgan and Mangum streets. One male in the Taurus was pronounced dead at the scene, but the cause of death was under investigation.

A second male believed to have been in the Ford Taurus was apprehended by officers a few minutes later on Mangum Street and taken to Duke Hospital for treatment. His condition was not known Sunday afternoon.

The accident was under investigation by officers from the Traffic Services Unit. The State Bureau of Investigation and the police department's Professional Standards Division were investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure.
