CHAPEL HILL — The University of North Carolina PoliceChief Don Gold has gone on an indefinite leave of absence.

He cleared out his office earlier this week and turned in the keys tohis unmarked police car.

University officials will not say why Gold has taken the leave.The vice chancellor for auxiliary services will oversee the departmentin Gold's absence.

She says the leave is not related to last month's underage drinkingcitationof a UNC trustee's daughter.The citation was issued in a campus parking lot after the UNC footballteam played Virginia.

Gold met earlier this week with the vice chancellor and the officer whowrote the citation.

The officer has filed a grievance about the case.
