Boy Reunited With Dad After Abduction Ordeal

CARY, N.C. — A Cary man whose ex-wife allegedly abducted their son while the boy was on a weeklong court-ordered visit with her said he hopes she can get help for any problems she might have.

"We should have a good life here in the future," Enrique Lazo said Thursday, the day after police in Charlotte arrested his 19-month-old son's mother, Rene Lazo, who now faces six charges in connection with the incident.

"I'm not trying to keep him from her, but my main concern is his safety," Lazo said. The boy will turn 2 on Jan. 2.

Lazo would not talk about his ex-wife's arrest or the charges she faces, but expressed relief that his son, Ricky, was found safe less than 10 hours after state authorities issued an Amber Alert for the child Wednesday.

"Everybody was just calling me saying it worked, the Amber Alert worked," Lazo said. "It was just an exciting moment. It's undescribable. I can't describe it"

Rene Lazo, 28, was arrested after police spotted her car northeast of Charlotte. They arrested her after a brief chase, during which she allegedly rammed a police cruiser with her car and approached police with a knife, authorities said.

She is charged with felony fleeing/eluding arrest with a motor vehicle, felony assault with a deadly weapon on a government officer, misdemeanor contributing to the delinquency of a minor, hit and run, driving while license revoked and misdemeanor abduction of children.

Rene Lazo also faces one felony charge of credit card theft on an outstanding warrant unrelated to this week's incident.
