UNC-CH Alcohol Study Shows Students Spend Big

CHAPEL HILL — Here's something to think about. Theaverage college student spends $450 each year on alcohol.

Some say college actually breeds alcoholism and that has researchers atUNC-Chapel Hill trying to find a way to break the drunken cycle. One stephas led to the start of a first-of-its-kind study exploring the nature andextent of alcohol use on college campuses.The school's student body president says UNC students want and need theinformation gathered in the study

"We've had a wake up call," he said. " Unfortunately we've had a coupleinstances occur that really shocked this community about this problem. Weheard the wake up call, we got out of bed, and we've got to start workingon the problem."

Students will be questioned about their alcohol use. The study iscompletely voluntary and confidential.
