DURHAM — A man whose body was stretched across railroad tracks near Pettigrew and Grant Streets in Durham was killed Saturday night when a train could not stop in time.
Police said Winfield Mason, 36, of Lyons Street, died instantly when Amtrak's Piedmont passenger train hit him about 8:40. The train was on its way from Durham to Cary.
Several of Mason's friends said he had been drinking heavily during the day.
Mason's body was taken to the state medical examiner's office in Chapel Hill for autopsy.
