Posted July 20, 1997
RALEIGH — Arthesia Necole Jones was counting the last few hours before she was due to leave Raleigh for a trip to Boston to help with her sister's new baby. Instead, the 15-year-old was shot to death early Saturday in a southeast Raleigh apartment. A search is on for a suspect.
Police are asking for the public's help in finding William Cornelius Burford, 23, of no known address. A warrant has been issued on the charge of murder. Burford, also known as "Cisco" or "Big Burt," is 6 feet 2 inches tall. An arrest warrant had been issued earlier for Burford, in connection with a shooting on Quarry Street Tuesday, in which a man was shot in the arm.
When Jones was shot, several people were thought to be in the apartment. When police arrived, she was found alone. The apartment is rented in the name of Clarence "C" Radcliffe, 39.
Jones lived with her parents at 1404 Stovall Drive, and was visiting the apartment at 517 S. East Street.
Friends and neighbors said she had been looking forward enthusiastically to her visit to Boston. She was to leave Raleigh Sunday.
A reward will be paid for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Jones' murderer. Anyone with information is asked to call Raleigh police at 890-3555 or CrimeStoppers at 834-4357.
