RALEIGH — Rabies has reached the epidemic stage in North Carolina and experts to not expect it to go away any time soon.
The number of reported rabies incidents has risen by more than 400 cases so far this year, and state health officials expect to see around 1,500 total for 1997.
That's 150 times more cases than just six years ago when only ten cases were reported.
The state veterinarian says three separate outbreaks from Tennessee, Florida and Pennsylvania have converged on North Carolina.
