Special Olympics will Bring the World to the Triangle

RALEIGH — It will be the largest sporting event in our state's history.The Special Olympics World Games will bring athletes from more than 150 countries to the Triangle.Ten thousand athletes and coaches will be here, as well as 1,500 membersof the media.

And it all happens just two years from now. 730 days to be exact, That's when they'll light the torch to begin the Special Olympics WorldGames.So today's milestone was a chance for a call to action.

It was part pep rally today in downtown Raleigh as Special OlympicsPresident Tim Shriver introduced some local hopefuls, and partannouncement.

Former Duke basketball star Grant Hill was named vice chairman of theWorld Games.He's been involved with Special Olympics for years, and saysthe job was an easy sell.

So, what's it like to be up on the podium with Grant Hill? SpecialOlympian Billy Quick summed it up best... "it's pretty awesome!"

Governor Hunt is asking everyone in North Carolina to get involved in thegames.More than 2,000 volunteers are needed for the games to go smoothly.
