Lawyer Claims Ownership of Hurricane's Name

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — A Raleigh lawyer has staked a legal claim to the name "Carolina Hurricanes." That could cause problems for the National Hockey League team when it moves to Raleigh.

Robert Holmes says he is the sole owner of the name "Carolina Hurricanes."Dan Norris, a spokesman for the secretary of state's office, says he suspects Holmes is just trying to get money out of owner Peter Karmanos. But Holmes says he's not doing this for money. He also said the name isnot for sale.

Holmes said he staked a claim to the name because he didn't think an out-of-town owner would work in the Triangle. He registered the name withthe state the day before the team announced it would move to Raleigh.
