Wilson Has Rude Awakening

WILSON — Anyone who slept late this Saturday morning inWilson may well have had a rude awakening. A tornado, part of the rashof storms that raced across North Carolina, inflicted substantial damagein some parts of Wilson.

Extensive damage was done to Vinson Bynum ElementarySchool, where about 300 people were meeting in the school auditorium whenthe tornado touched down at 10:05 a.m.

Wilson police said three people were slightly injured as the roof wastorn off the school, and nearby cars were damaged. The school's cafeteriaexperienced the worst damage.

Another tornado, this one in Pender County, slightly injured a womanand her child. Emergency Management officials said the two received minorcuts, but were shaken up by the experience.

Four mobile homes in Pender County were damaged. A small funnel cloudhad been spotted by several people just before it tore through the areanear Hampstead.
