WILSON — Anyone who slept late this Saturday morning in Wilson may well have had a rude awakening. A tornado, part of the rash of storms that raced across North Carolina, inflicted substantial damage in some parts of Wilson.
Extensive damage was done to Vinson Bynum Elementary School, where about 300 people were meeting in the school auditorium when the tornado touched down at 10:05 a.m.
Wilson police said three people were slightly injured as the roof was torn off the school, and nearby cars were damaged. The school's cafeteria experienced the worst damage.
Another tornado, this one in Pender County, slightly injured a woman and her child. Emergency Management officials said the two received minor cuts, but were shaken up by the experience.
Four mobile homes in Pender County were damaged. A small funnel cloud had been spotted by several people just before it tore through the area near Hampstead.
