Posted Updated

WHITEVILLE — A fire at a major hog farm in ColumbusCounty killed more than 6,000 hogs and caused about $1 million in damage.

Fire broke out Thursday evening at the Turbo Hog Farm near the SouthCarolina border where winds gusting up to 30 mph, combined with a shortageof manpower, made fighting the blaze in two buildings extremely difficult.

In spite of that, volunteer firefighters exhausted themselvesgetting the fire under control. Four buildings and some hogs were saved.

Turbo is one of the largest companies in the county. Firefighters sayeven though the fire is out, it will take a long time to clean up thesite. The threat of disease from dead animals means extra precautionsmust be taken.
