Johnston County Still Sprucing Up After Fran
Posted April 20, 1997
CLAYTON — Hurricane Fran roared through North Carolina last September 5, but residents are still dealing with the aftermath. Saturday, it was Clemmons State Park's turn to be spruced up.
Volunteers turned out at the park yesterday to get the picnic area ready for summer. The group cleared out downed trees and branches that Fran snapped like matchsticks.
The storm killed about 75 percent of the mature trees in the 500-acre park, and also caused $30,000 - $50,000 in damage to park facilities.
Still, come summer, lots of fun will be had at the park, which is situated on Old Highway 70-A.
