Blasting Cap Successfully Removed

CHAPEL HILL — A Chapel Hill soccer field is ready forgames as usual today, after a live blasting cap found in a nearby portabletoilet was successfully removed Saturday afternoon.

Police called a halt to the games of the Rainbow Soccer League andevacuated the field, which is on UNC property. A child had reported thecap's presence in the toilet.

A State Bureau of Investigation bomb squad worked with UNC-CH policeand campus security on handling the device. It could have been detonatedby static electricity or an electronic signal.

The caps are often used to blow up large rocks at construction sites.The investigation continues, and anyone with information on who put thecap in the toilet is asked to call 911 or CrimeStoppers at 942-7155.

The field is situated between Cleland Drive and Flemington Road, offUS 15-501.

Authorities also suggest that anyone using public facilities becautious when using them.
