Raleigh Police Get Tip on Unsolved Murders

RALEIGH — Raleigh police received a telephone tipFriday leading them to a letter which contained information about at leastone of the six unsolved deaths of African-American women. They say theyare still evaluating the contents of the letter.

The caller led them to a letter which had been placed on top of a softdrink machine at the Hillsborough Street Y.M.C.A. Major O.L. Hinton saidthey're taking a hard look at this lead.

Someone who saw the letter told WRAL TV5 that it was handwritten andseveral pages long. Police dusted the soft drink machine for fingerprints.

Hinton says they are taking this tip very seriously.

Hinton says police traced the call that came at about 10 a.m. Friday,but they won't say where it originated.

Police would not comment on whether the caller or letter writermentioned a reward. Crimestoppers and the governor's office are offering atotal of $6,000 in reward money for information leading to the killer orkillers of the six women.
