Ligget Workers Laid Off, Retired

DURHAM — Liggett is laying off 35 workers andoffering early retirement packages to an additional 50. The Durhamcigarette maker says hourly workers will bear the brunt of the cuts.

As recently as five years ago Liggett employed nearly 1,700 people.After this round of cuts, it will be down to about 500.

Liggett workers have yet to find out which employees will be gettingthe pink slips.
