Broughton Student Dead of Brain Hemmorhage

Draper was the starting goalie on Broughton High School's soccer teambefore becoming the latest in a series of tragedies to strike the Raleighschool this year.

Draper was considered one of the best soccer players in the state, andno one knew that better than her parents. Draper's father, StephenDraper, told WRAL TV5's Mark Roberts thatBetsy was an exceptional girl who gave her all, so much so that a favoritecoach gave her a nickname.

This is the third tragedy at Broughton since the current school yearstarted.

First it was 17-year-old Jackson Griffin, who drowned in Crabtree Creekafter Hurricane Fran raised it to flood levels. Then three students werestruck by a car on their way to school. One of them, Frank Nicholson, isstill in critical condition at Wake Medical Center.

Student Darryl Stanford says it has been a difficult year, but studentsare trying to remain positive.

Judy Draper, Betsy's mother, says it's hard not to wish for the futurethe family planned together.

The Drapers say Betsy's brain hemorrhage had nothing to do with hersoccer career. The family asks that well-wishers make donations to theAmerican Lung Association in Betsy's memory.
