HILLSBOROUGH — A Mebane truck driver has been charged in a Friday afternoon traffic accident that killed an Appalachian State University student.
The Highway Patrol charged Howard F. Blough, 29, of Apt A, 707 N. Summit Ridge Rd, with death by vehicle and failure to reduce speed.
The accident occurred at the merge of I-85 and I-40, about 3:30 p.m. Friday.
Blough, driving a flat bed truck west on I-40, came on a traffic slowdown. He swerved into the median to avoid hitting the cars in front of him, according to the patrol.
But he crossed the median running 65 mph when he slammed head on into an eastbound car driven by Kristie Lynn Curran, 19. The impact sent her car rolling over several times, and it also struck another car, slightly injuring a Garner couple.
Curran was returning to her Cary home for the weekend. She and her family had moved to Cary in 1993 from New Fairfield, CN. She was a graduate of Cardinal Gibbons High School. She is survived by her parents, brother and grandparents.
Investigators said alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
