Long Lines at Area Food Stamp Offices

Posted Updated

DURHAM — The long line in front of the Durham foodstamp office started forming early Friday morning, with people ranging inage from the very young to the very old.

Many of those had never requested public assistance before, but withfreezers and pocketbooks emptied by Hurricane Fran's tedious aftermath, they felt they had no where else to turn.

Linda Zimmerman said her family lost a lot of food.

The long line in Durham grew to 700 people by afternoon, as peopleused umbrellas and newspapers to block the hot sun and hunted forsomething cool to drink.

Durham County Social Services Director Daniel Hudgins said there wereemergency food stamps available.

Seeing all those people lined up waiting for the means to provide theirfamilies with the basic necessities was overwhelming to some. Beyond thedowned trees and power lines, Fran's fury has struck at the heart ofsurvival for some.

The scene was similar in other areas cities. In Fayetteville, ninelocal radio stations urged people to donate everything from food tocleaning products.

Fayetteville responded.

Organizers of the Fayetteville were very happy with the turnout, andsaid they expected no less from the people there.
