Durham Transit Riders Upset With Service

Posted Updated

DURHAM — Some people in Durham say that are fed up with public transportation.

Dozens of frustrated riders packed into the

Durham Area Transit Authority

(DATA) board meeting Wednesday night.

Many complained that DATA buses are dirty and are often late. The biggest complaint, however, was about safety.

"Most of the time when it rains the buses have no wipers, the brakes give out going through the traffic lights and there's no air for the senior citizens," says rider William Harrison.

A new company, Coach USA, took over management of the bus system in July.

The general manager tells WRAL that after years of neglect, most of the buses are in poor condition, and that the company is working to fix the problems as quickly as possible.
